Upcoming Events The Story of John Gordon - presented by John T. Meyers: On Tuesday, November 18, 2008 7:30 PM at the Ceilidhe Club, John T Meyers (club member) and Archivist for the City of Providence, will make a presentation on his research on the hanging of john Gordon, an Irish imigrant from Cranston, RI. The execution took place at the old RI State Prison in Providence on February 14, 1845. This presentation will cover the arrival and experiences of the Gordon family from June 1843 to February 1852. Join us for an evening of history and discussion about this subject. Refreshments will served for free and a cash bar. Ask those who attended the last presentation and they will surely tell you not to miss this event! Turkey Raffle - Friday November 21, 2008 at 8:00PM: Following the next monthly meeting on Friday November 21, 2008 at 7:30 PM, will be the Turkey Raffle. Thanksgiving Dance: Saturday November 29th from 8:00 - 12:00AM: Music by Kathy and the Irish Americans for your pleasure!
ONGOING Monthly Club Meetings: Now will be held on the thrid Friday of the month at 7:30 PM. Don't forget that the pub downstairs is open every Friday evening along with card playing, light refreshments and good company. We hope to have some surprises coming up on some Friday nights. Stay tuned! Card League: Maureen Lyons will host a High/Lo Jack Card Tournament on Friday evenings at the club. The tournament will run from September through May. HAPPENINGS ON THE HORIZON Children's Christmas Party - Sunday December 14th, 2:00PM - 4:00PM: We are requesting that everyone bring at least one canned good to be donated to a food bank. Prior Events Irish Titan, Irish Toilers: Joseph Banigan and Nineteenth-Century New England Labor by Scott Malloy. On Tuesday, September 30, 2008 from 7:30pm, Professor Malloy will make a presentation about his writing and research of the Irish experience. His new publication will be available for a cash/check purchase of $19.99, a 20% discount. The book covers the arrival and experiences of irish immigrants to Rhode Island from the 1820's to the 1890's. The book focuses on one highly successful Irish refugee from the great famine in the 1840's. Joesph Banigan went from an impoverished potato patch in County Monaghan to head the U.S Rubber Company here in Rhode Island. The book was recently reviewed in the Sunday 9/14/08 edition of the Providence Journal. Professor Malloy will autograph and inscribe the publications.
